RWANDA: This afternoon, once construction ended, we taught the workers and farmers English for our weekly hour. We reviewed “head, shoulders, knees and toes” which went significantly better than last week; instead of simply covering their faces with their hands during the “eyes, ears, mouth, nose” verse, they actually motioned to the correct body parts. We also taught directions (right, left, … <a

RWANDA-Friday was quite an interesting day. We began the day at the construction site but left early for our walk into Rubona, the small, tiny, perhaps even minuscule village just outside of Agahozo Shalom. I forgot to mention in previous posts, but the word “Agahozo” is Kinyarwandan for “place where tears are dried”. They really don’t mince words. The Agahozo Shalom Youth Village in Rwanda prides itself in installing in the children the idea that they, orphans of the genocide, are worthy of helping those less fortunate than themselves. This concept of going outside the village to help others is not only to help them recognize how lucky they are to be in ASYV, but also to teach them … <a

This morning we awoke at 8:00 AM to go to the construction site even though the 30 Rwandan workers had been there since 6. Our bodies were weak and sore from the heavy building from the day before, but we went right into work and started carrying bricks and buckets of cement to the workers. After endless security lines, checking in and re-checking in, touching base in four different countries (Israel, Ethiopia, Kenya and, finally, Rwanda), I’ve made it to the Agahozo Shalom Youth Village, a village for orphans of the Rwandan genocide that tore through the country in 1994. The villages lies just about an hour outside of Kigali, the capitol city of Rwanda.
