Special Events and Day Trips

Full Group Activities – There are several opportunities throughout the year during which all three Year Course sections come together. These include the opening and closing ceremonies of Year Course and a variety of hikes and social events. In addition, participants are welcome to travel to visit other sections during free weekends and other free time.

Orientation: Upon arriving in Israel, all participants come together for opening introductions before heading off to their starting cities.  This initial orientation will take the whole group to the Kotel, provide a meet-and-greet with the Israeli staff and help them adjust to their arrival in Israel.  Getting together as a whole group, during Orientation and at other times during the year, creates a sense of being part of something bigger than just their own section.

Tiyulim (hikes / overnights): The full group of Year Course participants will come together a number ofl times during the year for opportunities to share stories of their individual experiences and explore the beauty of the country.  While the locations and scheduling of these trips may change, the tiyulim will cover different parts of the country.

Sports Day: Friendly competition provides countless opportunity for fun!  During the year, all Year Course participants will come together for a day of camaraderie and good-natured competition (much like the Maccabia held during the Young Judaea Summer Israel programs).

Siyurim (Day Trips) – Day trips are conducted throughout Israel during the course of the year and are considered an integral part of the Year Course program. Special attention is given to the geography, geology, history and archaeology of Israel. All field trips are supervised and directed by qualified guides and teachers. While on siyurim Year Course staff and participants are accompanied by medical and security personnel as needed. These trips may involve a substantial amount of hiking. Siyurim will be designed for those chanichim who have been to Israel before as well as for those who are in Israel for the first time.

Siyurim in Bat Yam will be part of the academic program and the options will depend on the courses being offered. These may include various sites in the North of Israel.

Siyurim in Jerusalem will be part of the academic program and the options will depend on the courses being offered. Potential siyurim include Ammunition Hill, Har Herzl, key political sites around Jerusalem, the Old City, the Tower of David Museum and more.

Siyurim within Israel Experience will depend on the option chosen by the participant. Those participants who are participating in Outdoor / Desert volunteering or Social Action volunteering will go on siyurim around the south of the country that are relevant to their volunteering theme and will explore the southern part of Israel.

  • YC Alumni Say:

“This is my first time in Israel. I hear things from the media and my parents back home, but I really had no idea what was actually going on here. So, to come here and do the army program, and meet Muslims who live in Israel, to see interactions and see what actually goes on here, it’s very eye-opening.” – Nathan Moussein, Minneapolis, MN
  • YC Alumni Say:

“ This program is truly one-of-a-kind, and the various lenses through which participants get to view Israel throughout the year make it a rewarding and dynamic nine months. ” - Sarah Pfander, Evanston , IL , Oberlin College
